New technology to enhance marine mammal science and conservation

Our lab studies the application of (1) real-time acoustic monitoring for marine mammals from autonomous (unmanned) ocean platforms, and (2) aerial drones to measure the health of large whales (see PhD student Gina Lonati's bio). We focus on two applications of real-time acoustics; studying whale habitat use and selection, and supporting dynamic management.  This research is done in collaboration with shipping and fishing industries, military, and fisheries management, through uptake of the technology into their operations. This uptake helps industry and protect whales while also funding the collection of valuable ecological data.
